One Met student, Pat, taught another, Julio, how to use a powerful 3D design program, OpenSCAD. Julio, from Providence, was struggling to get his prototype completed so he took the bus to FabNewport this morning seeking support and inspiration.

Julio has designed the “bait box;” A little gizmo designed to finish up a day of fishing without your hook and lure getting snagged on clothing and car seats. He had the drawings but no 3D model or prototype.

Pat, a junior at the East Bay Campus with diverse interests (he’s designed a musical instrument in OpenSCAD), dedicated 2-3 hours to guiding Julio. Kyler, another junior, also helped. They sung Julio’s praises as he caught on quickly, especially Julio’s ability to manipulate the dreaded polyhedron.  At 2:30 Julio glided out of the fab lab with smiling wide and a 3D design, which is almost ready for printing on the MakerBot Rep 2.

The quote of day came from Pat who said, “I never liked math until I started interning here.”
