FabNewport ran its first open workshop Thursday night at the Florence Gray Center. While the diverse crowd of 14 learned how to design in Inkscape and cut and apply vinyl, the coolest aspect of the evening was the collection of people. IMG_2338

Yvette Harris, President of Housing Authority of Newport’s Residence Council, showed up with her grandson. A family of four showed up from Jamestown. Becky Bolan, member of the Newport School Board, showed up to make a decal to put on the stern of her family’s boat—Becky’s Kitchen. One of the young people cleverly came up with the idea of putt “Jenius” on a t-shirt. Would Jenius in search of Karrot work for a clever idea on a shirt?

FabNewport’s platform is community development. We took a small step in the right direction Thursday night. Thanks to instructors Nick Logler and Pierce Gafgen for their time and talent.

When’s the next workshop?

Stay tuned.
