Surf and Turf: Conservation 101
Monday & Wednesday 3 – 4:30 9/18-11/8
Do you want to explore Narragansett Bay on kayaks and stand up paddleboards? How about forest trails on your two feet? FabNewport and the Norman Bird Sanctuary (NBS) are teaming up to offer a hands-on 8 week environmental science class that will take place at the sanctuary. We will provide transportation for all learners from Newport to NBS and home. This class will focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: life below water and life on land through exploration, research and investigation. Learners will practice sustainable use of the sanctuary’s land and water habitats while developing their environmental literacy and having.
Build a 3D Printer
Thursdays 3:30 – 5 10/5-12/14
In this course, your instructor will coach you through building your own 3D printer from a kit. You will also learn to create original designs in CAD software and print them out on your machine. You’ll be able to take your 3D printer home upon completion of the course! This course is great for anyone who enjoys invention, engineering, building/repairing machines, or designing with computers.
FabShop 101
Mondays 3:30 – 5 10/2-11/27
Join FabShop and learn to use MakerSpace tools to custom make gifts!! Design and make a T-Shirt, Etch a Glass with your own design, Stamp Custom Prints, and more! Use laser cutters and vinyl cutters, mixed with drawing and digital design software, to create handcrafted gifts using digital fabrication tools.
Scratch Magic
Thursdays 3 – 4:30 10/5-12/5
Learn to code using The MIT Media Lab’s Scratch programming language! In this course, you’ll learn computational thinking through making projects based on your interests, experimenting and sharing with your peers. On the very first day, learn to animate sprites to move, change appearance and make sounds. As we move deeper into the course, you’ll learn how real life people can interact with your programs, sometimes without even touching the computer! Magic!
